to Education and Training
In 2006, CIS-HI transitioned from the YMCA to become an official project
under the auspices of VRCH, a
longtime partner agency. The missions of VRCH
and CIS-HI are directly aligned and have been a mutually supportive relationship
whereby each entity has benefited.
The objectives for CIS-HI are:
- To learn what works and why through the eyes and ears of those served.
- To nurture people and the work they do in community building.
- To return to cultural roots to better understand the contemporary
worldview.
- To understand the dynamics of interdependent and culturally coherent
relationships between clients and service providers.
To
provide policymakers, service providers, and institutional leaders with
increased knowledge and understanding of the formal and informal support
systems in families and communities. VRCH
is committed to CIS-HI's continued success in serving communities through
strengthening families and communities with special attention to the "disproportionate
minority" in all risk categories of education, economics, social,
health, and culture. The mission of CIS to "create environments where
families and individuals live and practice ohana values of caring
individuals and shared responsibilities,”
which results in thriving interdependent relationships.
CIS brings 17 years of direct service to the most at-risk neighborhoods
of Waipahu. They established collaborative partnerships between private
and public stakeholders in an effective holistic, inter-disciplinary model
of serving families.
CIS is also known statewide for its Ohana Management System drawing from
the cultural values and practices of the host culture as a foundation
for a synthetic model of management for communities and service providers.
CIS has provided this training for more than 60 agencies throughout Hawaii.
The evidence of CIS's work is seen in the practice of the Ohana Management
System among CIS staff and clientele.
