Active Aging

The following sites were selected for the conference participants to observe programs and services on active aging. Some programs are for healthy seniors and the others are for frail seniors, but their major aim is to enhance the quality of life of their participants or residents by promoting healthy and active living. Alu Like’s “Ke Ola Pona No Na Kapuna Program” - Alu Like, Inc. has assisted Native Hawaiians in their efforts to achieve social and economic self-sufficiency for 30 years and continues to support the forward movement of Native Hawaiians in today’s ever-changing world. Ke Ola Pono No Na Kupuna Program (Good Health and Living for the Elderly) provides nutritional and supportive services for Native Hawaiian elderly 60 years and older.

Kahala Nui Retirement - Kahala Nui, a new life care retirement community in Honolulu, Hawaii. The community features beautifully designed private apartment homes for independent living, and an onsite, state-of-the-art care center, Hiolani at Kahala Nui, that will offer assisted living, nursing and memory support care.

King Lunalilo Home - Located at 501 Kekauluohi Street in Hawaii Kai, Lunalilo Home was established in 1883 as an adult residential care home facility by the will of King William Charles Lunalilo for native Hawaiian elderly. It was renovated in 2001 to house 42 residents. In 2004, Lunalilo Home expanded its services to include adult day care, temporary respite care and dietary services to senior citizens of all ethnic backgrounds. The King Lunalilo Adult Day Care Center is licensed for 44 participants.
   
Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center - Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center is the largest senior center in the state providing everything from craft classes to hot meals, advice on taxes, Social Security and health, and a simple escape from the daily grind of living alone. It opened in 1969 in an area with one of the highest concentrations of elderly in Honolulu. Catholic Charities Elderly Services administers the center and it is financed by the state legislature.
