Center on Aging
University of Hawaii at Manoa
Honolulu, Hawaii
The Center on Aging was established in 1988 as a freestanding
unit of the University of Hawaii, Manoa. In 1993, the Center was
transferred to the School of Public Health, currently is a part
of the School of Medicine. The mission of the Center is to increase
the University’s capacity to carry out research, instructional
and community service programs in the area of aging, and to make
its gerontologist resources available to the community, the state,
and the Pacific-Asia region. The specific goals of the Center are:
- To stimulate and conduct gerontologist and aging research,
- To promote initiatives and projects that contribute to improving
the health and quality of life of an increasingly divers population
of older adults and disseminate the knowledge on aging to scientists,
practitioners, and the public,
- To contribute to the training of skilled research personnel
and practitioners by offering the certificate programs, and
- To promote collaboration between the University and other organizations
and policy makers concerned with aging.
The Center on Aging staff are involved in a number
of research and training projects, some of which are conducted in
collaboration with other gerontologists across the campus. The main
areas of interest include:
- Successful aging
- Asia and Pacific Islander aging
- Care giving
- End-of-life care
